Prof. Dr J. Tinbergen
The Hague, 2gith November 1955
Sijzenlaan 41
Professor Arthur Smithies,
Department of Economics,
University of Oxford,
England.
My dear Smithies,
The College of Europe at Bruges (Belgium) 'is an
Institution where each year about 40 students, selected
from all western european countries, follow a postgraduate course in matters of importance to European
integration. The students have different backgrounds,
some of them being economists, others lajryers, historians,
etc. The objective is that they are trained in European
thinking and cooperation and so will become more appropriate
applicants for functions in the Institutions of European
Cooperation. Froa my own experience these last four years
I can assure you that it is a very nice group, I think
Professor Meade of the London School of Economics will be
of the same opinion. It is on behalf of the College of
Europe that I am asking you whether you would be prepared
to stay, say, two weeks at their Home and give a series
of lectures about a subject of your choice, but falling
within the scope of the College. Of course they will bear
all costs of your stay and pay you a fee, whereas the
fullbight scheme provides for the travelling expenses.
The choice of the period could be largely left to yourself,
but should be before May. If you would be in principle
prepared to come, the rector. Professor H. Brugmans, will
officially invite you. More exact details, as to the financial side, can best be given by the College itself.
Hoping you will find it possible to accept, I am,
with best personal regards, .
yours very sincerely,
(J. Tinbergen)
